British Lighting Design with Purpose
Hello – I’m Michael Russell, founder of Metrourbane. Based on the Isle of Wight, I started this company in 2018 with one goal: to design really useful lighting that’s simple to install, adaptable to almost any situation, and beautifully efficient in both energy and comfort.
I’ve worked in lighting design and engineering since 1992, collaborating with architects, designers, and clients all over the world – from car manufacturers to hospitality brands and large commercial buildings. Along the way, I’ve created everything from illuminated glass floors to uniformly lit façades, including the 680m² illuminated cladding for ‘Money Zone’ at London’s Millennium Dome (hero image).
But after decades in the industry, I saw a gap. Conventional lighting can be rigid – great in theory, but often hard to adapt once it’s on site. I wanted to design a lighting system that offered control, flexibility, and real-world practicality – lighting that looks great, performs brilliantly, and lasts.
That’s how Metrourbane was born. By combining standard metal conduit with innovative LED modules, I created a modular system that works beautifully indoors and out. It gives designers, installers, and even DIY users the freedom to build their own interior and exterior lighting with an industrial yet refined aesthetic.
Made Locally, Built to Last
Almost everything we make is produced here in the UK – over 95% within eight miles of our workshop on the Isle of Wight. That’s something I’m proud of. It means we support local companies, reduce transport emissions, and keep a close eye on quality.
Our fittings are designed for longevity – efficient heat management ensures each LED lasts for many years, and when the time comes, we even offer a refurbishment service so you can repurpose existing lights rather than replace them.
